Back to newsA video captured in Cretan waters shows two pufferfish (lagokephalos) fighting aggressively over a fishing bait. The lagokephalos is an invasive species that has spread throughout the Mediterranean and is commonly encountered by swimmers, snorkelers, and anglers around Crete. Tourists should be aware that pufferfish are highly toxic and must never be handled or consumed. If you catch one while fishing, cut the line rather than touching it. If you spot one while swimming, keep your distance. Local fishermen are required by Greek law to report and dispose of any caught specimens through official channels. The species poses no direct threat to swimmers unless handled, but its presence in Cretan waters has increased notably in recent years.
