Back to newsPufferfish (lagocephalos), an invasive and highly toxic species, have been spotted in Cretan waters in an unusual video showing the fish cannibalizing each other. Lagocephalos has spread throughout the Mediterranean in recent years and poses a serious risk to anyone who consumes it, as its flesh contains a potent toxin with no known antidote. Greek authorities have banned its sale and consumption entirely. Tourists should be aware that this fish can occasionally appear in local fish markets or be caught incidentally. Never eat lagocephalos under any circumstances, and if you are unsure about a fish being served to you, ask the restaurant staff to confirm the species. Reputable restaurants in Crete do not serve it, but caution is always advised when ordering seafood.
