Thursday, 25 June 2026/SourceCretan Magazine/1 min read
A fire broke out at a factory in the Agios Ioannis Chostos area near Heraklion and spread to nearby residential buildings, burning several homes. The area contains a high density of unauthorized constructions, which contributed to the fire's rapid spread. Emergency services sent an alert via the 112 system warning residents about heavy smoke in the zone. Firefighting teams responded and brought the blaze under control, with the fire now reported as receding. Agios Ioannis Chostos is an industrial and residential suburb located east of Heraklion city center. Tourists staying in or passing through the greater Heraklion area should be aware of possible residual smoke. If you receive a 112 emergency alert on your mobile phone while in Crete, follow the instructions provided, as the system broadcasts in multiple languages. There are no current reports of impact on Heraklion port or airport operations.
