Heraklion Welcomes Back Bronze Bust of Cretan Music Legend

Wednesday, 24 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The bronze bust of Nikos Xylouris, one of Crete's most celebrated musicians, has been returned to its original location in Heraklion. Xylouris, born in the mountain village of Anogia in 1936, is considered a defining voice of Cretan music and culture, known for his mastery of the lyra and his powerful recordings of traditional Cretan songs. The bust had been temporarily removed, likely for maintenance or restoration work, and has now been reinstalled at its site in the city. Visitors to Heraklion can stop by to pay respects to this cultural icon. For a deeper connection to his legacy, the village of Anogia, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Heraklion, hosts a museum dedicated to Xylouris and remains a living centre of traditional Cretan music.
