Back to newsHiking gorges in Crete has become increasingly dangerous this summer due to extreme heat, with the Fire Service reporting a rise in accidents and issuing urgent safety warnings. The most critical period is midday and early afternoon, when temperatures in narrow gorges such as Samaria peak sharply and can overwhelm unprepared hikers. Rescue operations have surged, stretching emergency services. Tourists planning to hike gorges are strongly advised to start early in the morning before 9 a.m., carry at least two liters of water per person, wear sun protection, and avoid entering gorges after 10 a.m. during heat waves. Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. If someone in your group shows signs of heat exhaustion, call 199 (Fire Service) or 112 (emergency services) immediately.
