Crete's Petrified Forest Opens for Public Tour on June 21

On Sunday, June 21, the Panhellenic Union of Retired Educators of Chania (PESEK) is organizing a guided visit to the Petrified Forest of rhizoliths at Stavros, on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania. The visit begins at 10:00 a.m. The site contains ancient fossilized root systems preserved in stone, offering a rare glimpse into Crete's prehistoric landscape. Stavros is located approximately 15 kilometers north of Chania city center and is already well known to visitors for its beach, famously featured in the film Zorba the Greek. While the June 21 event is organized for PESEK members, the Petrified Forest area is accessible to the public. Visitors exploring Akrotiri can combine a stop at the geological site with the nearby Stavros beach. Comfortable footwear and water are recommended for the rocky terrain.
