Back to newsGreek coast guard and local authorities in Crete have responded to new arrivals of migrants reaching the island by boat. Crete, positioned along active eastern Mediterranean migration routes, periodically receives vessels carrying migrants, primarily from North Africa and the Middle East. Arrivals typically occur along the island's southern coastline, including areas near Ierapetra, Gavdos, and the Libyan Sea shoreline.
For visitors, these events generally have no direct impact on tourism activities. Beaches, ports, and tourist areas remain fully operational. Ferries and domestic flights continue to run on normal schedules. Greek authorities, including the Hellenic Coast Guard, handle these situations routinely and professionally.
Tourists should be aware that if they spot a vessel in distress at sea, the emergency maritime number in Greece is 112. Normal travel plans across Crete are not affected.
