The meetings addressed demographic decline in highland communities and strategies for sustainable development in remote mountain areas across Greece. Anogia, located in the Rethymno regional unit at around 750 metres elevation, is one of Crete's most distinctive traditional villages, known for its Cretan music heritage, handwoven textiles, and strong local identity. Visitors exploring inland Crete can reach Anogia via the road from Heraklion or Rethymno, roughly an hour's drive from either city. The renewed institutional attention on mountain communities may support better infrastructure and services in these areas over time, benefiting travellers venturing beyond the coastal resorts into Crete's rugged interior.
