Back to newsA notable earthquake struck the island of Euboea (Evia) in central Greece, rattling residents overnight and causing widespread concern. Locals lost sleep as tremors were felt across the region. Seismologists have since assessed the situation and indicate the worst appears to have passed, with the more dangerous fault lines of the northern Euboean Gulf believed to remain inactive. Had those faults been triggered, significantly stronger earthquakes could have followed. This event is located in central Greece, roughly 300 km from Crete, and has no direct impact on visitors to the island. Crete operates on a separate seismic zone. Tourists currently in Crete can continue their travel plans as normal. As always in Greece, familiarize yourself with your accommodation's safety procedures, as minor seismic activity is common throughout the country.
