Back to newsAuthorities in the Municipality of Chania conducted a large-scale fire evacuation drill, simulating the emergency response required if a wildfire were to threaten a residential area. The exercise focused on coordinating the various agencies that would be involved in a real evacuation scenario, including emergency services, civil protection units, and local government teams.
Wildfires are a recurring risk in Crete during the summer months, particularly from June through September when dry conditions and strong winds can accelerate fire spread rapidly. The drill is part of ongoing preparedness efforts across the island.
Tourists staying in or around Chania should familiarise themselves with local emergency numbers (112 for all emergencies) and follow instructions from local authorities if a wildfire alert is issued in their area. Avoid lighting fires outdoors, especially during high-wind conditions.
