Back to newsGreek authorities are reminding property owners that they have approximately one week to declare the clearing of vacant and uncovered plots of land. This regulation applies to properties outside designated urban planning zones across Greece, including Crete. Owners who fail to clean their land risk fines, and municipalities may carry out the clearing themselves at the owner's expense. Certain categories of owners may qualify for exemptions. For tourists, this is part of Greece's annual fire prevention effort ahead of summer: cleared land reduces wildfire risk in rural and semi-rural areas. Visitors hiking or exploring countryside areas in Crete should stay on marked trails, check local fire risk alerts, and avoid lighting fires in open areas during the dry summer months.
