Crete's most authentic villages offer visitors a window into the island's living traditions, far from the busy coastal resorts. Inland settlements such as Anogia, Kritsa, Zaros, and Axos have preserved centuries-old customs, local crafts, and traditional architecture. These villages are known for handwoven textiles, local cheeses, raki distilleries, and folk music still practiced by residents. Anogia, in the Rethymno highlands, is particularly renowned for its embroidery and lyra players. Kritsa, near Agios Nikolaos, hosts one of Crete's most visited craft markets and the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera. Most villages are accessible by car or organized day tours from major towns. Visiting outside peak summer months, particularly in spring or early autumn, gives the most genuine experience of daily Cretan life and increases the chance of encountering local festivals and communal gatherings.
