Samaria Gorge Closes Thursday as Strong Winds Hit Western Crete

Wednesday, 17 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Samaria Gorge in western Crete will operate under modified conditions on Thursday due to forecast strong winds. The Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (ORGANEK), acting on updated weather bulletins from the Greek National Meteorological Service, has issued guidance affecting access to the gorge. Samaria is one of Europe's longest gorges at 16 kilometers, running through the White Mountains National Park to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. It is accessible only on foot and draws thousands of hikers each season. Visitors planning to hike the gorge on Thursday should check ORGANEK's official announcements before departing, as entry restrictions or partial closures may apply. Strong winds in mountainous terrain can create hazardous conditions along the trail. Ferries from Agia Roumeli may also be affected by rough seas, so factor return transport into your planning.
