Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge, one of Crete's most popular natural attractions in the White Mountains of Chania, will be closed to visitors on Sunday, June 14, 2026. The closure was announced by OFYPEKA, the Greek Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization, citing strong winds forecast for the area that day. The gorge, a 16-kilometer trail ending at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, draws thousands of hikers each season and requires a full day to complete. Visitors with plans to hike on Sunday should postpone their trip and check OFYPEKA's official announcements before traveling to the trailhead at Xyloskalo. The gorge is typically open daily from May through October, weather and conditions permitting. No alternative date was specified in the announcement.
