Greek Authorities Arrest Migrant Smugglers Off Crete Coast

Saturday, 30 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greek Coast Guard authorities have arrested several people smugglers following a series of migrant arrival incidents along the southern coast of Crete. Among those detained was a minor. The Coast Guard reports that migrant crossings to Crete's southern shores are continuing at a sustained pace, keeping maritime patrols on high alert in the area. For tourists, these operations are concentrated in remote southern coastal zones and do not affect main tourist destinations or beaches. Increased Coast Guard presence in southern waters is routine and reflects ongoing regional migration patterns across the eastern Mediterranean. Visitors travelling by ferry or private boat in southern Cretan waters may notice heightened maritime activity. There are no safety concerns for tourists, and travel to popular areas such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and the south coast resorts remains unaffected.
