Greece Tackles BOAK Crisis with Night Construction and Traffic Management

Thursday, 14 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Construction work on the BOAK, Crete's main east-west highway, is causing significant travel delays across the island. Following a meeting with Greece's Minister of Infrastructure, authorities have agreed on a package of measures to ease the disruption: better coordination between work crews, special traffic management arrangements, night-shift construction to reduce daytime congestion, and increased police presence to keep traffic moving. The highway is currently facing a double front of active works, meaning delays can occur simultaneously in multiple sections. Tourists driving between Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, and eastern Crete should expect slower travel times and plan extra time for road trips. Traveling early morning or late evening may help avoid the worst congestion. Check local traffic updates before setting out on longer drives across the island.
