Construction works on the BOAK highway near Chania caused significant traffic disruption, bringing road movement to a near standstill. Frustrated drivers reported the situation to local traffic police, who were initially unaware of the extent of the delays but dispatched officers to the scene to help manage the congestion. The BOAK is a major east-west highway currently under development across Crete. Works at this stage are ongoing and disruptions of this kind can occur with little advance notice.
