Back to newsA recent survey by ELSTAT, Greece's national statistics authority, has identified significant gaps in primary healthcare services across the country, including Crete. The findings point to shortages in local health centers and general practitioners, meaning wait times for non-emergency medical care can be longer than expected. For tourists visiting Crete, this is worth keeping in mind: if you require routine medical attention, private clinics are widely available in major towns such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos, and are generally accessible without long delays. Travel insurance that covers private medical care is strongly recommended. For emergencies, public hospital emergency departments remain operational. Carrying a basic first-aid kit and any personal prescription medications in sufficient quantity for your stay is advisable.
