Chania Airport Tests New Radar System to Improve Flight Operations

Tuesday, 30 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
The "Daskalogiannis" Airport in Chania, western Crete, is currently testing a new air traffic control radar system. General Director Giorgos Vilos confirmed that the installation is progressing, though full operational benefits are not expected for approximately two years. Once fully active, the upgraded radar will improve the monitoring and management of air traffic arriving and departing from Chania, potentially leading to greater punctuality and safer flight operations. Daskalogiannis Airport serves as the main gateway for visitors traveling to western Crete, handling flights from across Europe throughout the tourist season. Travelers flying into or out of Chania should not expect immediate changes to their experience, as the system remains in its testing phase. Improvements to flight scheduling and traffic flow efficiency are anticipated once the radar becomes fully operational around 2028.
