Azogyres plane tree

The sacred monumental plane tree of Azogyres is located in the monastery of the 99 Holy Fathers in the village Azogyres in the province of Selino. Below this plane tree, that has been declared as nature monument, the 99 Holy Fathers settled after arriving to Crete from Egypt, Cyprus and Turkey.Among them was Saint John the Hermit , who is regarded as the father of ascetism in Crete, and was buried in the monastery Katholiko .

It is characteristic that the plane tree of Azogires is evergreen, compared to most plane trees that shed all their leaves in winter. They say that the branches of the tree form 99 crosses, like the number of the holy fathers.
