The Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark in central Crete is hosting the 6th Congress of UNESCO Global Geoparks of Greece and Cyprus, opening in the coming days. Psiloritis, centered around Mount Ida (the highest peak in Crete at 2,456 meters), is one of Greece's recognized UNESCO Global Geoparks and a significant geological and cultural heritage site on the island. The congress brings together representatives from geoparks across Greece and Cyprus to exchange knowledge on geotourism, conservation, and sustainable development. For visitors, this is a good time to explore the Psiloritis region, which includes the Nida Plateau, the Ideon Cave (mythological birthplace of Zeus), and traditional villages such as Anogia. The area is accessible from Heraklion by car, approximately one hour south. Check local event listings for any public activities scheduled alongside the congress.
