Back to newsThree of Crete's four regional units, Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi, are under a Yellow (High) fire danger classification today, Monday July 13, according to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection's daily Fire Danger Forecast Map. Only Chania is not included in the warning.
Yellow classification means conditions such as dry vegetation, low humidity, and wind create a significant risk of wildfires starting and spreading quickly.
Tourists should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or discarding cigarettes in or near natural areas. Hiking in forested or scrubland areas carries additional risk today. If you see smoke or flames, call the emergency number 199 (Fire Service) immediately.
Stay on marked roads and trails, keep car windows closed near dry vegetation, and check local updates before heading into rural or mountainous areas such as the Lasithi Plateau or inland Heraklion and Rethymno regions.
