Back to newsHeraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport (HER) has been ranked the worst airport in Europe according to a recent survey, a result that will not surprise many frequent visitors to Crete. The airport, built in the 1930s and significantly expanded in the 1970s, regularly struggles with overcrowding during peak summer months, long queues at passport control, limited seating, and outdated facilities. Travelers arriving in July and August should expect congestion and allow extra time for baggage claim and transfers. The good news: a brand-new international airport is under construction at Kastelli, east of Heraklion, with an expected opening around 2028 and capacity for up to 18 million passengers per year. Until then, passengers are advised to arrive early, pre-book airport transfers, and keep expectations realistic for the current terminal experience.
