Back to newsOn July 2, 2026, authorities in Rethymno issued an administrative fine of 3,046.88 euros to a man found responsible for starting a fire in an agricultural and forested area. The penalty was confirmed by investigative officers from the Fire Investigation Unit (ΔΙ.Π.Υ.Ν.) of Rethymno, Crete.
This serves as a strong reminder that lighting fires in or near natural areas in Crete is strictly prohibited, particularly during the summer high-risk season. Violations carry significant financial penalties. Tourists should avoid any open burning, including campfires and disposable barbecues, outside of designated areas. Discarding lit cigarettes in dry vegetation is also illegal and dangerous. If you witness a wildfire or smoke, call the Greek emergency fire service at 199. Respecting fire safety rules helps protect Crete's landscapes and the communities that depend on them.
