Back to newsCrete is launching a pilot program to manage the lagocephalus, a toxic invasive pufferfish species that has spread throughout Greek and Mediterranean waters in recent years. The fish, which originates from the Indo-Pacific region, is highly poisonous and must never be eaten. Local authorities are implementing measures to monitor its presence and reduce risks for fishermen and coastal visitors. Tourists swimming or snorkeling around Crete should be aware of the species but are at minimal risk in the water. The main danger is consumption: if you see an unfamiliar fish being sold or served, ask staff to confirm the species. Do not handle any pufferfish found on beaches or in nets. The program aims to protect both marine ecosystems and public health across the island.
