Hyperspectral Imaging Reveals Unreadable Historical Manuscripts

Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Researchers at the Technical University of Crete have developed a groundbreaking hyperspectral imaging technology that has successfully revealed previously unreadable historical manuscripts and written texts. The technology was created by Professor Konstantinos Balas and his team from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Hyperspectral imaging captures light across many wavelengths invisible to the naked eye, allowing scientists to read faded, damaged, or obscured writing on ancient documents without physically touching them. The discovery has significant implications for the study of Cretan and broader Mediterranean history. For visitors with an interest in history and archaeology, Crete already offers world-class sites such as Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Developments like this reinforce the island's role as an active center of historical research, not just a destination for ancient ruins.
