Loggerhead Sea Turtle Found Dead on Crete Beach

Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A dead sea turtle was discovered by local residents on Friday afternoon at Pacheia Ammos beach in Stavros, a coastal area in the Chania region of western Crete. Witnesses promptly alerted the Chania Municipality and the Coast Guard, though the turtle had not yet been removed from the site at the time of reporting. Sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead species (Caretta caretta), are a protected species commonly found in Cretan waters. If you encounter a dead or distressed sea turtle on any Cretan beach, do not touch or move it. Report it immediately to the local Coast Guard (Limeniko) or the ARCHELON sea turtle protection society. Stavros beach, located approximately 17 km north of Chania, is a popular tourist destination known for its clear waters and the filming location of the movie Zorba the Greek.
