Sea Urchins: The Summer Hazard on Crete's Beaches

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Sea urchins are a common hazard on rocky beaches and in shallow coastal waters around Crete, particularly during summer months. These spiny creatures cling to submerged rocks and are easy to step on when entering or exiting the water. Their sharp spines can pierce skin and break off, causing pain, swelling, and potential infection if not treated promptly. Visitors should wear water shoes or fins when swimming near rocky shorelines or reef areas. If stung, do not attempt to pull the spines out with tweezers, as they may shatter further into the skin. Instead, soak the affected area in warm water and vinegar, and seek medical attention at a local pharmacy or clinic. Most coastal villages in Crete have pharmacies equipped to handle this common summertime injury.
