Back to newsThe Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, located between the villages of Atalís and Bali on the northern coast of Rethymno regional unit, held its annual feast day celebration for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Large crowds of worshippers and clergy gathered for the panegyri, a traditional Greek Orthodox festival combining religious services with communal celebration. The monastery, set in a scenic coastal area roughly 35 kilometers east of Rethymno town, is open to visitors outside of liturgical hours. Tourists are welcome to attend future feast day celebrations, though modest dress is required, meaning covered shoulders and knees. The Bali area is also known for its small beach coves and makes a pleasant half-day stop when traveling between Rethymno and Heraklion along the E75 coastal highway.
