Back to newsGreece has recorded its first confirmed case of West Nile virus for 2026. The virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, is present in parts of Greece each summer, typically peaking between July and October. While the risk to individual tourists remains low, visitors should take standard precautions: use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk, and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms. Symptoms include fever, headache, and fatigue, appearing 3 to 14 days after a bite. Most infected people experience no symptoms or mild illness. If you develop fever during or shortly after your trip, consult a doctor and mention potential mosquito exposure. No travel restrictions are in place.
