Strong winds and extreme heat fuel wildfire threat in Crete

Monday, 6 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Crete is forecast to experience strong winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort (around 62-74 km/h) over the coming days, according to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis. The week begins with dry, hot conditions, which significantly raises the risk of wildfires across the island. Temperatures are expected to climb further in the days ahead. For visitors, these conditions have several practical implications. High winds may affect ferry schedules and small boat excursions, so check with operators before departure. Avoid lighting fires or barbecues in outdoor areas, and stay clear of dry vegetation, particularly inland and in forested zones. During periods of elevated fire risk, some hiking trails and rural areas may be temporarily closed by authorities.
