Back to newsAugust in Crete is peak summer season, bringing the hottest and driest conditions of the year. Temperatures across the island typically range from 27 to 35 degrees Celsius, with coastal areas like Heraklion, Chania, and Agios Nikolaos regularly exceeding 33 degrees. UV levels are extreme, so sun protection and hydration are essential throughout the day. Crowds are at their highest, particularly at popular beaches and archaeological sites such as Knossos. Accommodation and rental cars book up well in advance. On 15 August, Greece observes the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Dekapentavgoustos), a major national holiday. Many local businesses close, while churches and villages across the island hold celebrations and festivals. Ferries and domestic flights may be fuller than usual around this date. Visiting early morning or late afternoon is advisable for outdoor sightseeing.
