Toxic pufferfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), originally from the Red Sea, have been spreading throughout the Mediterranean and are increasingly spotted in Cretan waters. These fish are highly dangerous: their skin, organs, and flesh contain tetrodotoxin, a poison with no antidote that can cause paralysis and death. Swimmers and snorkelers should never touch or handle them. Fishermen are advised to cut the line rather than remove a pufferfish from a hook by hand, as even a bite can sever a finger. If you catch one or see it on a beach, do not approach it. The species has been present in Greek waters for several years and sightings are increasing each summer. If you are stung or bitten, seek emergency medical help immediately.
