Heraklion Has 400 Taxis—But Overcharging Is the Real Problem

Thursday, 9 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Heraklion has more than 400 licensed taxis in operation, making the fleet one of the larger ones in Greek regional cities. According to the president of the Heraklion Taxi Owners and Operators Association, supply is not the issue for visitors struggling to find rides. The association points to other structural problems within the sector, including reports of overcharging, while criticizing the lack of government support for the industry. For tourists, the practical takeaway is that taxis are available in Heraklion, but riders should confirm the meter is running at the start of any journey and request a receipt. Official taxi stands are located at the port, outside the airport arrivals area, and at central points in the city. Ride-hailing apps registered in Greece can also provide a transparent fare estimate before booking.
