Invasive Pufferfish Devastate Crete's Fishing Industry

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Invasive pufferfish species, primarily the silver-cheeked toadfish (*Lagocephalus sceleratus*), have spread across Greek waters including those surrounding Crete, causing significant damage to the local fishing industry. Originally from the Red Sea, these fish entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal and have multiplied rapidly in recent years. They destroy fishing nets, consume bait, and deplete stocks of commercially valuable fish. For visitors to Crete, this means local seafood menus may feature fewer traditional catches, with some species harder to source or priced higher than usual. Tourists should also be aware that pufferfish are highly toxic if consumed and should never be purchased from informal or unverified sellers. All seafood served in licensed restaurants remains safe, as reputable establishments source through regulated supply chains.
