Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge in western Crete will be accessible from both entrances on Monday. The gorge, one of Europe's longest at 16 kilometres, runs through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in Chania regional unit and is among the island's most visited natural attractions. Hikers typically enter from the Xyloskalo trailhead at Omalos and exit at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, or travel the route in reverse. Having both entrances open gives visitors full flexibility to choose their preferred direction. The gorge is generally open from May through October, weather and safety conditions permitting. If you plan to hike, wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and check current conditions with local authorities before setting out, as closures can occur on short notice due to weather or trail hazards.
