Retired Ferry Deliberately Sunk to Create Crete Diving Park

Wednesday, 10 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The retired ferry "Folegandros" has been deliberately sunk in the waters off Apokoronas, in the Chania regional unit of northwestern Crete, to serve as the centerpiece of a new underwater diving park. The vessel now rests on the seabed, creating an artificial reef that will attract marine life and offer divers an exciting wreck dive experience. The Apokoronas diving park is part of a broader initiative to develop underwater tourism in Crete. The site is expected to become accessible to certified divers in the coming season. Apokoronas is located roughly 30 kilometers east of Chania city, making it a convenient day trip. Visitors interested in diving the wreck should contact local dive centers in the Chania area for guided excursions, certification requirements, and access updates as the park officially opens.
