The ranking highlights destinations where getting around on foot is convenient and enjoyable. While no Cretan city appears in the top 20, Crete's main towns including Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno offer largely walkable historic centers with concentrated sights, tavernas, and shops within easy reach on foot. Tourists exploring these old towns are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, as cobblestone streets and hilly terrain are common. The island's villages and coastal promenades also reward walkers with scenic routes away from traffic.
