Crete Swimmers Warned: Puffer Fish, Jellyfish, Ghost Nets Pose Risks

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Swimmers and snorkelers in Cretan waters should be aware of three increasing hazards this season. Puffer fish, which are toxic if handled or eaten, have spread across the eastern Mediterranean and are now regularly spotted along Crete's coastlines. Jellyfish blooms are also more frequent in summer months, with stings ranging from mildly irritating to painful depending on the species. Additionally, ghost nets, abandoned fishing gear drifting underwater, pose entanglement risks for divers and swimmers in some areas. Tourists are advised not to touch any marine life, wear water shoes in rocky areas, check local beach flags and conditions before entering the water, and seek first aid immediately if stung or injured. Local lifeguards at organized beaches can advise on current sea conditions.
