Back to newsAuthorities in Chania are warning residents and visitors about a WhatsApp scam in which fraudsters pose as Greek Red Cross representatives to solicit donations. The Greek Red Cross has confirmed it is not conducting any such collection and has urged the public not to send money in response to these messages.
If you receive a WhatsApp message requesting a donation on behalf of the Red Cross while in Crete, do not respond and do not transfer any funds. Legitimate Red Cross fundraising drives are announced through official channels and verified in-person representatives carry official identification.
Report suspicious messages to local police (dial 100) or contact the Greek Red Cross directly through its official website to verify any donation request. Tourists carrying Greek SIM cards or using local numbers are equally at risk of receiving these fraudulent messages.
