Plakias is a popular tourist resort, 36 km south of Rethymno , in the fertile plain with extensive olive groves created by the Kotsyfos River and enclosed by the mountain ranges of Psili Koryfi and Kouroupa . One of the most important drivers of the area's development is its large coastal front, known as the Gialia .

In addition to the main beach of Plakias with its shallow sand, which belongs to the community of Myrthios , west of the village as far as the fishing shelter of Plakias , there is also the second beach of Plakias, Skinos , which belongs to the community of Sellia . Skinos has sand and many rocks, ideal for snorkeling.

Near the village, the beach is organized with umbrellas, while further west it becomes more rocky. However, right next to the harbor of Plakias, there is a beautiful small sandy beach, where one can be secluded without much fuss.

As with all the beaches in the area, the main problem in summer is the frequent strong wind. Along Skinos, the road that leads to the beautiful beach of Souda passes.
