Ler a história

At the small and picturesque village Galype at province Pediada we meet a very remarkable church dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary ( Panagia ). The church of Panagia celebrates on August 15 and it is a good opportunity for someone to visit the interior of the temple (as it is locked all yaer round for its protection).

The temple is located almost in the center of the picturesque village, surrounded by many narrow alleys with very old houses, remnants of a bygone era. The church yard is spacious with pines and cypresses.

The exterior wall bears an old walled ceramic plate ( pinakio ) in very good condition. The church interior does not bear frescoes.

However, of particular importance is the Venetian funerary monument ( arcosolium ) inside the temple, dating from the 16th century. The elaborately carved stone bears various Venetian coats of arms, one of which depicts a lion holding a sword and brings to mind the Lion of Saint Mark (the symbol of Venice ).

The same symbol is found on the roof of the sanctuary (exterior side).
