Ler a história

Limnionari or Agios Georgios beach is located in one of the most isolated areas of Crete, on the east coast of the wild Rodopou peninsula. It is formed in a narrow bay at the exit of the Agios Georgios gorge, which starts south of the now deserted monastery of Saint George in Menies .

The monastery was built in the 9th century but was abandoned after continuous pirate raids, with the 16th-century fortified tower in the enclosure serving as a means of warning. Limnionari beach has large pebbles and very calm waters, while the seabed is ideal for exploration.

On the beach, we can see traces of old walls, probably from monasterial crops or even fishermen's installations, who still use this inlet as an anchorage today. The vegetation of the area consists mainly of carob trees, while it is not uncommon to see goats on the beach.

Access to Limnionari is almost exclusively by boat, as access through the gorge is demanding and arduous.
