A bit south of Hondros viilage, Viannos district, there is Pirgos peak. Despite the fact that it is not too high, it offers panoramic views to the bay of Keratokambos and the villages of West Viannos .
At this hill that is naturally fortified, there is an ancient settlement as there are many traces of pottery and building bases around. Atop Pirgos , there is a stone building that is called Pirgos ( tower ), that was built during the German Occupation in order to watch the surrounding area.
The locals were forced to build that tower. It is noteworthy that locals didn’t build that in square shape, as most towers, but a shape like the Greek Orthodox churches.
Indeed, they actually wanted to change the tower to a temple, just after Germans would leave Crete. The name of the temple would be Saint Eleftherios ( eleftheria means liberty ).
However, this idea did never come true.
