Ler a história

The cemeterial church of Lord Christ the Savior (Afendis Christos), celebrating on August 6, at Dories was probably the central temple of a small monastery of the Venetian Era. The church is a single-aisled, vaulted temple built of stones of varying sizes.

Next to it we see two stone buildings (probably monk cells) and a tank. The monastery probably operated in the middle of the 16th century.

According to local tradition, the monastery of the Lord Christ actively participated in the fight against the Ottomans and became a shelter for the Cretan rebels. Of particular interest is the portable icon of the Transfiguration of the Savior on the iconostasis of the temple and is characterized by the narrative nature of its iconography, with the episodes of the transition and departure from Mount Tabor of Christ and his students framing the central theme.
