Xerokambos is located 103 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos , 47 km south of Sitia and 69 km east of Ierapetra , on the borders of Ziros village. In recent years it has developed quite a bit mainly due to the many choices of beautiful beaches.
However, a common problem in the area is the frequent strong summer winds. Just west of the small settlement of Xerokambos , on the hill of Farmakokefalo , there are the ruins of the Hellenistic city of Ambelos and the picturesque church of Agios Nikolaos .
Near the church, at the base of Cape Trachilos , the beaches of Ambelos begin, formed in three consecutive small bays with light turquoise waters. The first beach from the west is called Gerontolakkos or Agios Nikolaos .
The name Gerontolakkos means Sacred Bay and apparently comes from a sanctuary that existed in the Hellenistic city. Next to Gerontolakkos, there is the unique beach of Argilos with its clayey soil (ideal for a natural spa) and a little further east, there is the beautiful beach of Ambelos or Chiona .
In Argilos, you will see many people having a natural spa with the pieces of clay that they pick off from the beach.
