Ler a história

Southeast of the Monastery of Arkadi on the western slopes of Psiloritis, the wood Aravanes is formed which climbs up to the peak of Mygia. Access is possible through rough dirt roads that start from Ancient Eleftherna or west of Arkadi Monastery, which owns large areas here.

In the heart of the forest at an altitude of 1400 meters, there is the picturesque Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, built next to the spring Arkadiotiki, the most important source of water in Aravanes. Another beautiful spot is the small plateau of Agios Konstantinos east of Agios Georgios.

Part of the forest is dense and covered by wild holm oak trees and hollies. This shady part of Psiloritis was used by the EAM guerrillas during the Second World War to hide from the German conquerors.
