Island Overview
Saturday 20 June 2026 brings a clear east-west split across Crete. A band of cloud stretches along the northern coast from Chania through Hersonissos and Malia, keeping those resorts partly cloudy to overcast for much of the day. The eastern Mirabello Gulf and the south coast are bathed in sunshine, with Agios Nikolaos and Elounda reaching 27.3°C, today's island high.
North Coast vs. East and South
Heraklion reaches 25.8°C under a partly cloudy sky with northerly gusts to 22.6 km/h. Hersonissos and Malia are both overcast at 24.9°C and 25.2°C, though no rain is forecast for either. Chania is the calmest north-coast option today: 25.5°C and winds at just 16.9 km/h, making the old harbour and western beaches perfectly pleasant despite the patchy cloud. Rethymno may catch a brief light shower of around 0.4 mm this afternoon with gusts approaching 25 km/h.
The south and east enjoy the best of the day. Ierapetra at 26.1°C and Makrigialos at 26.3°C bask under clear or mainly clear skies, and the Mirabello Gulf resorts are fully in the sun. One caveat: the meltemi is picking up sharply on the eastern flank. Ierapetra is recording gusts to 38.9 km/h, strong enough to overturn beach umbrellas and worth factoring in if you are planning a full day at an exposed beach.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Heraklion carry the same cloud layer seen on the northern coast. Visibility on mountain roads is adequate, but expect patchy mist above 1,400 m. Walkers heading into Samaria Gorge should set off early before afternoon cloud builds over the higher sections of the route.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 23.3°C at Sitia to 24.8°C at Chania and Ierapetra. Wave heights peak at 1.42 m off Chania and 1.38 m at Malia, a moderate chop consistent with early-meltemi conditions on the north coast. The sheltered southern bays are considerably calmer: Ierapetra sits at just 0.3 m despite the strong onshore wind, and Makrigialos at 0.42 m. UV is uniformly high across all reporting stations, index 8.1 to 8.5. At this level, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes.
Swim Verdict
Good conditions island-wide. Sea temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties are comfortable everywhere. Families with young children will find the flattest water on the south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos. Northern beaches carry a moderate chop but are manageable for most swimmers. Avoid extended open-water swimming near exposed headlands around the eastern tip if gusts hold above 35 km/h.
Tip of the Day
The strong wind on eastern and southern beaches makes the sun feel less intense than it is. Apply SPF 50 before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. With a UV index above 8 across the whole island, a midday break in the shade between 12:00 and 15:00 remains the most reliable way to avoid overexposure.
