Back to newsWhen temperatures in Crete exceed 35 degrees Celsius during summer, hiking through the island's gorges offers a natural escape from the heat. Shaded by steep canyon walls and cooled by streams and underground water, these ravines stay significantly cooler than coastal areas and inland plains. Popular options include gorges in the Sfakia region of southwestern Crete and several lesser-known routes in the eastern and central parts of the island. Most trails are accessible from late spring through early autumn, though early morning starts are strongly recommended during July and August. Visitors should bring at least two liters of water per person, wear sturdy footwear, and check trail conditions locally before setting out, as some gorges have seasonal closures. Entrance fees apply at certain managed sites such as Samaria Gorge.
