Chania Strengthens Emergency Response with Volunteer AED Program

Six volunteer rescue groups in the Chania region of Crete have received automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and CPR training mannequins as part of a regional emergency preparedness program. The equipment strengthens first-response capacity across the prefecture, meaning faster medical assistance is available at public events, beaches, and remote areas where these volunteer teams operate. For tourists, this is a positive development: trained volunteers with AEDs are increasingly present at popular sites around Chania. If you witness a cardiac emergency while visiting Crete, call 166 (ambulance) immediately and ask bystanders whether a defibrillator is nearby. Knowing basic CPR before you travel is always advisable, particularly if you plan to hike or visit less-populated areas of the island.
